03/06/2005

SALEM, VA — Junior Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored four goals to help lead Frostburg State to an 11-9 victory over host Roanoke Sunday afternoon to mark the first game of the season.

Junior Kelley Duncan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) opened the scoring five minutes into the game. Meghan Cromwell scored a goal with 17:04 minutes left in the first half to tie the score 1-1.

The Bobcats came back to score four consecutive goals, two from Ritz and two from senior Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County), to take a 5-1 lead, but Roanoke found the net twice in the final minute of the half to cut FSU's advantage to 5-3 at the break.

The second half started off much like the first with a goal from freshman Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) at 27:24.

One minute later, Cromwell would score again for the Maroons to make it a 6-4 Bobcat lead.

Ritz scored the third of her four goals with 22:10 left in the game before Roanoke closed to within 7-6 with two consecutive goals with 20 minutes left to play.

The Bobcats responded with back-to-back goals by Duncan and sophomore Tina Trent (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) at 18:18 and 18:01, respectively.

Emily Hearn scored two goals for Roanoke to again bring the hosts to within one.

Ritz scored her final goal at 4:12, and, Duncan found the net two minutes later to cap the scoring for the Bobcats.

Mary Stewart Malone scored with five seconds on the clock to close out the scoring for Roanoke.

Bobcat sophomore Rachael Lewis (Laurel, Md./Wilde Lake) played the entire game in the net, stopping 12 shots to earn her first career win.
