BALTIMORE, MD —
Frostburg State Lacrosse dropped a hard-fought 13-10 game to Goucher College Saturday. The Bobcats rallied to tie after a two-goal halftime deficit, but were not able to recover after a four-goal Goucher offensive streak led by Kate Howell.
Howell opened Gopher scoring, finding the first of her five goals on the day at 3:17.
The Bobcats (7-3) added two tallies when sophomore Kelley Duncan (C. Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.) found the net at 4:18 off an assist from sophomore Tara Blake (Arundel/Crofton, Md.) and junior Page Macey (Linthicum/Linthicum, Md.) scored at 5:46.
Howell added another goal at 8:33, followed by a goal from Kim Solter at 9:47.
Duncan added another tally at 10:32 and freshman Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) posted her first goal of the day at 16:11 off an assist from sophomore Kate Nicol (Glenelg/Mt. Airy, Md.), but the Gophers (8-4) tied the game at 4-4 when Ashley Sudbrook found the net at 16:41.
Goucher pulled ahead by one at 20:10 when Dean Ulman found the net and then by two when Sudbrook scored her second goal on the day at 23:48.
Macey added a Bobcat goal at 27:39 and Howell closed scoring for the Gophers and for the half with a tally at 29:24.
Brumby opened second stanza scoring with a goal at 31:25 off an assist from sophomore Stefanie Ritz (C. Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.) and junior Caitlin Howley (Damascus/Damascus, Md.) followed with a goal at 32:29 to tie the game at 7-7.
Goucher proceeded to go on a scoring spree, scoring four goals in just over 10 minutes to pull ahead 11-7.
Nicol tallied a goal at 46:54 off an assist from Ritz. At 49:32, Lori Petruzzi scored for the Gophers, followed by a tally from Ritz less than a minute later off an assist from Nicol.
Petruzzi added another Gopher goal at 52:39 and Nicol added one more for the Red and Black at 59:15, but it was not enough to keep the Bobcats alive as Goucher was able to seal the victory, 13-10.
Senior Sarah Shockley (Fallston/Fallston, Md.) had 18 saves on the day.
The Bobcat defensive core of Howley, junior Candi Burkhardt (Parkville/Baltimore, Md.), freshman Tina Trent (C. Milton Wright/Bel; Air, Md.), sophomore Erin Young (Glasgow/Newark, Del.) and senior Amanda Skilling (Queen Anne’s County/Church Hill, Md.) added a combined 18 groundballs, four caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Frostburg State returns to action Wednesday, April 14 when it hosts the College of Notre Dame for a 4:30 pm contest.
