04/18/2006

FROSTBURG, MD — Senior Colleen Baughman netted six goals to lead Villa Julie to a 15-13 victory over the Frostburg State lacrosse team Tuesday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

The Mustangs (5-8) opened the game with two early goals just two minutes into play. The Bobcats (5-7) responded with two goals, one from sophomore Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) and another from classmate Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), to tie the game at two apiece with 14:56 left on the clock.

VJC found the net three consecutive times to take the 5-2 advantage at the 14:43 mark. FSU tied the score again (5-5) with goals from Lamont, and freshmen Danielle Merson (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Meredith Martin (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson).

Villa Julie scored three goals to close the half and take an 8-5 advantage at intermission.

Frostburg State opened the second half with three goals, one each from juniors Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Tina Trent (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Rihard, to tie the game for the third time with 26:41 left to play.

Just over two minutes later, the Mustangs would score twice more to take a 10-8 lead. FSU took its first lead of the game, 12-10, when Merson, sophomore Maria Schrum (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Lamont and senior Ann Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) each netted a score with 13:23 on the game clock.

After the teams exchanged goals, Villa Julie used a late surge to score four times in the last 5:28 of play to take the win.

Lamont led the Bobcats with three goals.

Freshman Bobcat keeper Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) picked up 14 saves in the loss, earning her twelfth double-digit performance of the season.

FSU returns to action on Thursday April 20, as it hosts Ursinus for a game beginning at 4:30.
