Lacrosse Drops Overtime Thriller to Goucher

FROSTBURG, MD- The Bobcats and the Gophers were dead-even throughout regulation play until Goucher's offensive leader Kate Howell found the net with less than a second left (0.02) in overtime to defeat FSU 11-10.

In the first half, FSU (4-5), broke-open scoring when freshman Kelley Duncan (C.Milton Wright/Bel Air, Md.) found the net at 29:20 off an assist from freshman Caitlin Howley (Damascus/Damascus, Md.).

Goucher replied when Ashley Sudbrook scored the first of her four goals on a free-position at 27:58 and Ashley Snyder found the net at 27:42.

The Red and Black pulled even when sophomore powerhouse Page Macey (North County/Linthicum, Md.) scored the first of her four goals at 25:35 and then pulled ahead 3-2 when Macey found the net at 23:59.

FSU notched-up by two when senior Andrea Duffy (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) found the net at 22:57 off an assist from freshman Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright).

The Gophers responded when Sudbrook scored at 21:27 and then pulled even when Howell scored the first of her six goals when she netted a free position at 18:49.

The Gophers briefly took the lead when Howell found the net again at 17:34. FSU was quick to answer as Duffy scored her second goal at 16:17, leveling the score at 5-5.

The Bobcats then pulled ahead with back-to-back goals. The first by Macey at 14:13 and the next by freshman Melissa Tomko (Pallotti/Laurel, Md.) at 11:14 off an assist from Ritz.

The Gophers answered with back-to-back goals of their own when Howell found the net at 9:05 and Sudbrook scored on a free-position at 7:17, leveling the score at 7-7 to cap first half action.

The Red and Black took command in the second half when freshman Kate Nicol (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) scored at 27:40 and then Macey scored her fourth goal at 10:12, pulling ahead 9-7.

Again, the Gophers got back in the game as Howell scored at 4:58 and then again with :07 left off an assist from Katie Demming, forcing the overtime and capping second half scoring.

In the first overtime, FSU was the first to draw blood when Duncan found the net with 1:57 left, notching the score to 10-9.

Again, with :07 left, the Gophers managed to pull even when Sudbrook found the net for the fourth time. In the second stanza of OT, the two teams battled evenly, but Goucher was the last to have posession.

With 0.02 left, Howell capped scoring with her sixth goal, barely rallying past FSU for an 11-10 decision.

Junior goalie Sarah Shockley (Fallston/Fallston,Md.) had an impressive 19 saves on the day.

"We hussled hard and were very agressive today," said head coach Eric Day. "Whoever was the last to have the ball was going to win it and that's what happened. We played tough."

Frostburg State returns to action on Tuesday, April 15th when it hosts Bridgewater at 4:00 p.m.
