Lacrosse Falls to No. 16 Washington & Lee
LEXINGTON, Va. —
Sophomore Avery Lovejoy scored six goals and added two assists to lead No. 16 Washington & Lee to a 19-7 win over Frostburg State Wednesday afternoon.
Frostburg State (1-1) opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game when junior Kelley Duncan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the net with a free position shot.
However, the Generals (2-1) ripped off seven consecutive goals to pull away. Lovejoy pulled her squad even at the 2:05 mark and freshman Christine Bender capped the run with the last two tallies.
Duncan netted her second goal of the day at 20:38 and senior Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County) followed with her first of the afternoon just under three minutes later to cut FSU’s deficit to 7-3.
Washington & Lee pushed its lead to 10-3 with three tallies in the next 1:37 before Bobcat freshman Maria Schrum (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Macey at the 29:17 mark.
Lovejoy capped the first-half scoring with just 31 seconds in the period to give W&L an 11-4 cushion at the break and then scored three straight after the intermission to give the hosts a commanding 14-4 advantage.
Macey scored all three of FSU’s goals in the second half but it wasn’t enough.
Bobcat freshman Rachael Lewis (Laurel, Md./Wilde Lake) allowed 14 goals in 36:16 of action, while junior Meghan Norris (White Hall, Md./Hereford) gave up five goals in the final 23:44.
Freshman Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) led the FSU defense with eight ground balls and three draw controls.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend with a pair of road games in North Carolina. FSU visits Methodist Saturday before taking on Greensboro Sunday. Both contests start at 1 pm.
