Long Scores Eight; Lacrosse Cruises Past Shenandoah 19-5

FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Ann Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) tallied nine points on eight goals and one assist as the Frostburg State lacrosse team took down Shenandoah 19-5, Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

FSU (4-4) extended their winning streak to four-straight games and used goals from 11 different players, while SU (5-10) had just two players score goals.

Frostburg State got on the board just 40 seconds into the game, when Long scored her first of the afternoon. She went on to score two more goals, putting the Bobcats up 3-0 at the 25:46 mark in the first half.

The Bobcats then went on to add seven more to their total over the next 23 minutes, extending their lead to 10-0. Seniors Brittany Brumby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Long each tallied a goal during the run, while junior Lindsay Lamont (Sykesville, Md./Century) scored two goals and junior Carly Rihard (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) and freshman Elisabeth Hildebrand (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) put in one goal each.

The Hornets finally got on the board with 2:56 remaining in the first half, when senior Kelly Matagiese netted an unassisted goal for first of three on the afternoon.

In the second half, Long opened the period with two back-to-back goals, putting FSU up 12-1 with just 2:29 off the clock.

Frostburg State and Shenandoah would exchange a pair of goals, before the Bobcats would score two more at the 17:36 and 16:37 mark of the second half. Senior Tina Trent (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) and freshman Marissa Henderson (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) netted the goals for FSU.

The Bobcats capped off the afternoon, when senior Rachel Lewis (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) who was taken out of goal and put into the field, scored a goal with two seconds remaining, ending the game in FSU’s favor, 19-5.

Lewis earned the win for Frostburg State, playing 30 minutes in net and making six saves, while sophomore Erin Morrell (Easton, Md./Easton) played the second half in goal and recorded one save.

Frostburg State returns to action on Sunday, April 15 when it travels to Lynchburg at 1:00 pm.
