NEWPORT NEWS, VA —
Sophomore Page Macey (Linthicum, Md./North County)
scored seven goals and added two assists to power Frostburg State to a 17-3 win over host Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon.
Macey found the net four times and aided on two more goals in the opening half as the Bobcats (1-2) took a commanding 9-0 lead at intermission.
Freshman Kate Nicol (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the contest with an assist from Macey, and Macey gave FSU a 2-0 lead with an unassisted tally just 2:09 later.
Freshman Stefanie Ritz (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored off a feed from senior Andrea Duffy (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) before the Bobcats ripped off three goals in less than five minutes.
Nicol converted another pass from Macey, Duffy hit the net unassisted and Macey notched her second goal of the day with help from freshman Kelly Duncan (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to put FSU ahead, 6-0.
After nearly seven scoreless minutes, the Bobcats caught fire again with three goals in a span of 5:07. Duffy began the outburst with an unassisted goal with 9:44 left in the half, and Macey found the net twice in less than two minutes to cap the run.
Christopher Newport (1-2) ended its drought 7:57 into the second half on an unassisted goal by Natalie Musashe, but the Bobcats continued to pour it on thanks to a 7-1 stretch.
Macey sent in a pass from Ritz, Duncan converted a helper from Duffy and freshman Tara Blake (Crofton, Md./Arundel) tacked on an unassisted goal near the midway point of the half to give the Bobcats a 12-1 cushion.
The Captains snapped FSU's spurt at 16:50, but Macey scored twice off feeds from Nicol in a span of 2:01 to make it a 14-2 contest.
The game then ended in a flurry of action as the teams combined for four goals in the final two minutes.
Duncan notched her second goal of the day with 1:53 left before sophomore Melissa Tomko (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) followed just 22 seconds later.
CNU capped its scoring with 48 ticks remaining, and Ritz tacked on her second goal of the afternon with 21 seconds to go.
Junior Sarah Shockley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) made nine saves before giving way to freshman Meghan Norris (White Hall, Md./Hereford), who recorded three saves over the final 10:02.
"We played very unselfishly today, highlighted by our eight assists, and we were much better defensively," said FSU head coach Eric Day. "We're maturing and becoming a better team each time out."
The Bobcats return to action on Monday, March 24 when they visit Roanoke at 4:00 pm.
