FROSTBURG, MD —
Frostburg State freshman catcher Ashley Martin (Manchester, Md./North Carroll)
was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Southern All-Star Softball Team Friday.
Martin is the lone freshman on the first team and is just the second Bobcat ever to be named to the ECAC's first unit. Former Beall High standout Krissy Jackson was a first-team selection as a utility player in 2002.
Martin enjoyed one of the best offensive seasons in school history this past year.
She led the Bobcats with a .400 batting average, 12 doubles, four home runs and a school-record 35 runs batted in. She surpassed Jackie Chaney's former mark of 33 RBI set in 1999.
Martin also tied for the team lead with 32 hits and two triples, and her 18 extra-base hits was the third-highest single-season total in program history.
The ECAC honor is one of several awards Martin has earned this year. She was named to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference first team, was voted the AMCC Newcomer of the Year and was selected to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Atlantic Region third team.
Frostburg State posted a 13-12 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the AMCC this year, an marked improvement over its 8-15-1 finish in 2002.
