Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Mount Aloysius
02/08/2005

FROSTBURG, Md. — Justin Ohler scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Mount Aloysius to a 91-87 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over host Frostburg State Tuesday night at Bobcat Arena.

Aaron Melius also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the Mounties improve to 6-14 overall and 4-10 in the AMCC.

Frostburg State lost its third straight conference game and fell to 13-9 overall and 8-7 in the league.

The Mounties led by as many as 16, 72-56, with 11:19 left and fended off several Bobcat rallies.

FSU used a 12-0 run to trim a 78-63 deficit to just three with 5:07 left. However, Ohler sank two free throws and a jumper and Melius added a layup to make it an 86-77 contest with 3:21 to go.

The Bobcats again threatened, pulling to within four, 87-83, on a layup by junior Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) with 1:38 remaining.

However, the Mounties pulled down four key offensive rebounds and hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

The game started off well for Frostburg State, which sprinted out to a 17-6 lead in the opening five minutes.

Mount Aloysius missed 14 of its first 17 shots and Bobcat junior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John’s Prospect Hall) blocked four shots to spark the run.

The Mounties finally found their shooting touch and used a 10-2 run to close to within one at the 11:28 mark.

Red-shirt freshman Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) drained a pair of three-pointers and red-shirt junior Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Bishop Sullivan) added a pair of free throws to give FSU a 31-22 lead with 4:57 left in the half, but Mount Aloysius used a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to move ahead 37-35 with a minute to play.

Coursey sank a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining before Anthony Oxley closed out the half with a three-pointer to give the visitors a 40-37 edge at the break.

Deron Knox (17) and Roman Mims (13) also scored in double digits for Mount Aloysius.

Ryley led Frostburg State with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks, while Owen and junior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) each added 13 points.

Rosenthal and junior Brandon Howell (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored 10 points apiece.

The Bobcats return to action this Friday when they host Medaille in an AMCC contest at 8:00 pm.
