Men's Basketball Defeats Medaille in Overtime, 80-78
02/10/2006

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Four players scored in double figures to lead the Frostburg State men’s basketball team to an 80-78 overtime win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille Friday night at the Sullivan Center.

The Bobcats improved to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the AMCC, while the Mavericks fell to 4-18 overall and 2-12 in the league.

The game was evenly matched in the beginning with three ties and neither team leading by more than two points. That changed at the 12:39 mark when sophomore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) hit a three-pointer to give FSU a four-point lead (15-11).

The Bobcats then used an 8-2 run, ending with a shot by sophomore Dale DeBerry, Jr. (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) from behind the arc, to gain a 25-15 advantage with 7:47 on the clock.

Medaille would close the gap, but would never come closer than five. DeBerry ended the half with a free throw to give FSU a 37-31 lead at intermission.

Sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) opened the second half with a three just 30 seconds into action. With 13:07 left in regulation, the Bobcats took their biggest lead of the game (15) when freshman Carter Simmons (Annapolis, Md./Southern) hit a jumper to make the score 55-40.

The Mavericks had a 14-2 run to come within 57-54 with 9:01 left in regulation. Medaille took the lead, 61-59, for the first time since early in the second half when James McNeil hit a three with 5:21 on the clock.

With 46 seconds on the clock, the Mavericks led 65-62. Owen hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation to send the game into an extra period.

In overtime, Frostburg State held on to its advantage, leading by as much as seven at the midway point, off a basket from Hazel from behind the line. MC came within two (78-76) with just over a minute left.

Back-to-back free throw by senior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) made the score 80-76. Last second shots from the charity stripe by Maverick Bill Gersitz were not enough.

Hazel led the Bobcats with 18 points and six assists. McIntyre and Ryley added 16 scores apiece, while DeBerry scored 12 points. On the defensive side, McIntyre grabbed 9 rebounds, while Owen added 8 boards.

Medaille was led by McNeil who scored 48 points and 10 rebounds, while Gersitz added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow as it travels to Hilbert for another AMCC contest beginning at 4:00 pm.
