FROSTBURG, MD —
Freshman Jajcen Harris scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and senior A.J. Johnson added 23 points to power visiting Lake Erie to a 74-63 win over Frostburg State in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
The Storm improve to 5-9 overall and 2-0 in the AMCC, while the Bobcats suffered their third straight loss and fell to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the AMCC.
Frostburg State came out hot to start the game and built an 18-7 lead at the 12:38 mark. Sophomore Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) drained a pair of three-pointers and senior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) hit another to help the Bobcats surge ahead.
However, Lake Erie came charging back and used a 13-4 run to close to within 22-20.
Grabill hit another three to give FSU a five-point edge, but Harris scored his team's next seven points to push the Storm in front for the first time, 27-26, with 5:57 left in the half.
Vaughn countered for the Bobcats, hitting a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to give FSU a 33-31 edge, but two baskets by Harris and a three-pointer by Johnson put Lake Erie ahead 38-33 at the break.
Johnson then sank two free throws and another three-pointer to help the Storm open a 50-42 advantage with 15:10 to play.
The Bobcats hung tough, closing to within 51-49 on Vaughn's fifth three-pointer of the afternoon, but Harris hit two more layups as Lake Erie pushed its lead to 57-51 at the 9:49 mark.
FSU made yet another run, using a 7-0 stretch to take a 58-57 edge with 7:34 left, but junior Trevor Replogle hit a basket moments later to give the Storm the lead for good.
Johnson scored 11 of his 23 points in the final 5:46 to help seal the win.
Vaughn led FSU with 20 points, while Grabill added 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished with 11 points and eight boards.
The Bobcats endured another tough shooting performance, hitting just 18-of-66 (27.3 percent) from the floor.
FSU returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Pitt-Greensburg in another AMCC contest at 8:00 pm.
