FROSTBURG, MD —
Pitt-Bradford junior Matt Beacom scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Panthers used scorching first-half shooting to defeat Frostburg State, 92-80, in a key Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.
Frostburg State junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) scored a team-high 19 points and became the 17th Bobcat men's player to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He now has 1,011 points in his career.
Pitt-Bradford (12-3, 5-0 AMCC), which increased its winning streak to 12 games, came out on fire from the opening tip and hit 18 of its first 22 shots.
The Panthers quickly built a 17-5 lead after just five minutes of action and then hit seven straight shots to take a commanding 32-14 advantage at the 11:31 mark.
UPB extended its lead to 26 points, 52-26, on Jason Luther's three-pointer with 3:54 left in the half, before FSU closed out the stanza with a 9-2 run to trail, 54-35 at intermission.
The Panthers hit a blazing 22-of-33 (66.7 percent) from the field in the first half, including 7-of-15 from three-point range.
Bowery, who scored 13 points in the second period, hit the 1,000-point mark just 39 seconds after the break, collecting a rebound and sinking a jumper in the lane to make it a 55-37 contest.
Pitt-Bradford's lead grew to as many as 27, 77-50, with 9:06 remaining, but the Bobcats refused to roll over, outscoring the Panthers, 23-9, over the next seven minutes to close to within 13, 86-73.
However, Jeff McMahon snared a Bobcat missed three-pointer and followed with a long-range shot to put UPB up by 16 (89-73), and the Panthers cruised to the win.
Senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) added 12 points, five assists and three steals for FSU, which held a 40-34 edge in rebounding.
