Men's Basketball Dumps Bridgewater to Win FSU Tip-Off Tournament
11/22/2003

FROSTBURG, MD - Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored 17 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists and Frostburg State used a late 19-2 run to claim a 79-66 win over Bridgewater in the championship game of the FSU Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

Small was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after finishing with 33 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in two games. He shot 14-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line on the weekend.

Junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) added 15 points in the win, while junior David Quay, Jr. (Lewiston, Pa./Indian Valley) had 13.

Quay was also named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in two games.

Bridgewater (1-1) held a 57-54 lead with 7:59 left but Small pulled the Bobcats even with a three-point play.

The Eagles went back in front on a jumper by senior Jeff Schwalm (Sterling, Va./Park View), but the Bobcats took control with a 19-2 run over the next 5:30 that turned a 59-57 deficit into a 76-61 lead with 1:43 to play.

Vaughn began the outburst with a three-pointer that put FSU ahead for good, and he added two more in the stretch to put the game out of reach.

The game was a tight battle throughout, as neither team could create much cushion.

Bridgewater took a slight 12-8 lead early and kept Frostburg State at bay over the next six minutes.

With FSU trailing 23-21, Quay began a 13-4 run with a rebound and basket. Small then hit back-to-back shots and followed a Vaughn three-pointer with another basket to push the Bobcats to a 34-27 advantage.

Bridgewater closed to within three points twice in the final 1:47 of the first half but Small hit another jumper to give FSU a 38-33 lead at the break.

Sophomore Harry Moore (Newport News, Va./Warwick) led Bridgewater with 20 points, while Schwalm added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Moore, Salisbury junior Dameon Gibbs (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) and Waynesburg freshman Beau Wilson (Daybrook, W.Va./Clay-Battelle) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Frostburg State returns to action Tuesday when it visits Division II Indiana (Pa.) at 7:30 pm.
