FROSTBURG, MD —
Senior DeNelle Hale (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar)
sank a pair of go-ahead free throws with 24 seconds left and Pitt-Greensburg's last-second three-pointer fell short as Frostburg State pulled out a hard-fought 82-79 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
FSU (6-7, 1-1 AMCC) held a 78-73 lead with 1:18 to play, but Scott Winfrey and Isaiah Blanciak hit back-to-back three-pointers to give UPG (5-8, 1-2) a 79-78 lead with 33 seconds left.
Hale was then fouled under the basket on FSU ensuing possession and calmly stepped to the line and drained both of his shots to put FSU back in front 80-79.
UPG looked for the tying basket on its next possession, but senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) stole the ball at the UPG free throw line and was fouled on his way down the court. He also hit both of his shots from the stripe with four seconds left to give FSU an 82-79 advantage.
UPG lobbed the inbounds pass to halfcourt and the ball was tipped over to Blanciak, whose long three-pointer was off the mark.
The teams scrapped for nearly every point in the first half, and FSU moved out to an 18-12 lead at the midway point.
UPG pulled even with consecutive three-pointers, but FSU again took a six-point advantage, 30-24, on a jumper by sophomore Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall).
However, UPG closed out the half with a 17-8 run over the final 5:58 to take a slight 41-38 lead at the break.
FSU lead by as many as seven, 69-62, with 6:30 to play.
The exciting finish overshadowed an outstanding effort by Ryley, who scored career-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.
Small and junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) each added 14 points, while junior David Quay, Jr. (Lewiston, Pa./Indian Valley) scored 12.
FSU, which shot a season-high 57.7 percent (30-of-52) from the field, returns to action on Saturday when it visit Penn State Behrend in another AMCC contest beginning at 4:00 pm.
