hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 68-65 victory over Lake Erie in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup Friday evening at Bobcat Arena.
FSU won its fourth straight game to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the AMCC. Lake Erie dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the AMCC.
Frostburg State held the lead for the entire second half until Nate Malensek made a jumper to put the Storm ahead by two, 65-63, with 1:26 left. Junior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) cut the deficit to one on a foul shot at the 1:18 mark. Owen then collected a steal and missed a jumper but pulled down his own rebound and followed it up with what proved to be the game winning shot.
Frostburg State fell behind 4-0 in the opening minutes but went on a 12-0 run capped by a three-pointer junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll).
Lake Erie quickly erased the Bobcat lead with a 12-0 run of its own finished off by a Robert Williams jumper. The Bobcats countered by taking a three point lead, 21-18, on a layup by Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) with just under six and half minutes remaining.
The Storm used a 12-4 run to take a five-point lead 30-25 with 3:33 left until halftime. FSU scored the last nine points of the first half to take 34-30 lead into the lockerroom.
Senior Dustin Long (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) paced the Bobcat offense scoring 13 points while Owen added 12 and McCall pitched in 10. Owen led the Bobcats with six rebounds.
Robert Williams scored a game-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds in a losing effort for the Storm. Nate Malensek added 12 points and Jajcen Harris finished with 11. Williams and Reggie Richardson led the team with six assists apiece.
FSU returns to action tomorrow when it hosts La Roche at 6 pm.
