BUFFALO, N.Y. —
Corey Vander Sluis had a double-double to lead Hilbert to a 72-67 victory over Frostburg State in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Hafner Recreation Center.
The Hawks (11-11, 9-7 AMCC) opened the game by scoring in the first four seconds of play. The Bobcats (11-13, 8-9 AMCC) took their only lead of the game at the 19:02 mark (4-2) off a senior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) tip-in.
Hilbert had a surge of energy opening a 17-4 run over five minutes to take a 19-8 advantage. FSU slightly closed the gap,19-14, off three consecutive baskets, two from senior Brandon Howell (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and one from classmate Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson).
HC pressed on to lead by as much as 12 (30-18) with 5:56 on the game clock. Sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) closed the first half with a shot at 1:26 as the teams went into the locker rooms, the Hawks leading 35-27.
In the second half, Hilbert came out and netted three-straight baskets. The Bobcats closed the gap on a 14-0 run to tie the game at 44 apiece with 11:01 left to play.
Hilbert used a 11-0 surge to push ahead and take a 62-50 lead at the 4:33 mark. Frostburg State tried to close the gap, but could not come closer than 70-67 with 38 seconds left in the game. Back-to-back free throw in the closing seconds sealed the Hawk win.
Ryley paced the Bobcats with 16 points. Howell had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while McIntyre added 10 scores.
Hilbert was led by Dallas Reinard with 23 points, while Vander Sluis had 22 points and 15 boards. Ron Dussett and Michael Reyes added 10 scores apiece.
Frostburg State returns to Saturday, February 18 as it closes out its regular season as it hosts Pitt-Greensburg at 8:00 pm.
