Men's Basketball Falls to Pitt-Bradford in AMCC Action
01/29/2005

FROSTBURG, MD — Brian Hobbs scored a game-high 15 points to lead Pitt-Bradford to a 71-55 win over Frostburg State in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday evening at Bobcat Arena. FSU falls to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the AMCC, while the Panthers improve to 10-7 overall and 7-4 in league action.

After trailing by three at the half, Bobcat junior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) made a layup with 16:31 remaining in the game to close the Panther lead to one at 35-34. That would be as close as the Bobcats would get as UPB would score 15 straight points over the next five minutes to open an insurmountable lead, 48-34.

Frostburg State narrowed the Panther lead to 11, 53-42, on a Brandon Howell jumper with just under eight minutes left. The Panthers would take their largest lead of the game, 21, at the 2:20 mark on a free throw by Dan Thomas. Red-shirt freshman Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) made a layup at the end of regulation to close the gap to 16.

The game featured four ties through the opening five minutes before Pitt-Bradford scored six straight to pull away from an 8-8 deadlock. Aaron Kiffer’s three-pointer made it a 22-13 contest at the 7:18 mark but Frostburg State pulled even with a 9-0 run sparked by red-shirt junior Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Bishop Sullivan), who sank a three-pointer and two jumpers in the comeback.

After a Panther timeout, Ryan Race drained a shot from behind the arc to give the visitors the lead again before back-to-back buckets by junior Victor Arana (Aberdeen, Md./Ellison, Texas (Harford CC)) and Rosenthal put the Bobcats back in front 26-25.

Austin Mark then nailed a pair of free throws and Dan Thomas hit a jumper with two seconds left in the half to give Pitt-Bradford a 31-28 lead at the break.

Ryley paced the Bobcats with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting while pulling down five rebounds. Rosenthal scored 10 points and tied for the team lead grabbing six rebounds along with Arana.

Thomas scored 14 points for the Panthers and Ryan Race added 11 while Andy Schrum lead the way with eight rebounds.

FSU returns to action Tuesday, February 1 when they travel to Penn State Altoona at 8 PM.
