Men's Basketball Falls to Pitt-Greensburg in Semifinal Round of AMCC Tournament, 69-54
PAINESVILLE, OHIO —
Three players scored in double figures to lead No. 2 seeded Pitt-Greensburg to a 69-54 victory over No. 6 seeded Frostburg State in the semifinal round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Friday evening on the campus of Lake Erie College.
Frostburg State ends its season with a 12-15 overall record, while Pitt-Greensburg, 17-9, advances to play No. 1 seeded Lake Erie in the finals tomorrow night.
The game had its only tie (2-2) early in the opening half off a jumper from sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville). UPG’s Chris Street drained a three pointer at 18:56 to take the lead for good.
With 14:32 remaining, sophomore Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) hit a jumper to bring FSU within 18-16. Pitt-Greensburg answered with 12-7 run, ending with a basket by Bill Scavincky to take a 32-22 advantage with just over seven minutes left before halftime.
UPG took its biggest lead of the half (13) with 3:32 on the game clock. Back-to-back jumpers by FSU seniors Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) and Brandon Howell (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) narrowed the Frostburg State deficit to 39-30 at intermission.
The second half was much like the first with Pitt-Greensburg in control of the game. Sophomore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) hit a three-pointer to cut the UPG lead to 44-38 with 11:20 left in the game.
UPG would go on to lead by as much as 16 in the closing minutes to seal the win.
Hazel paced FSU with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) netted 12 points, while DeBerry added 11 scores.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by Duke Cooper who had 17 points and seven assists, while Scavincky and Chris Streett added 12 points apiece.
