Men's Basketball Loses to Christopher Newport, 92-84

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Six players scored in double figures as Christopher Newport handed Frostburg State a 92-84 loss Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

Juniors Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) and Brian Green (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) led FSU (4-5) with 19 points each. Green handed out six assists and Hazel led the Bobcats with five three-pointers.

Junior Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and senior Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) chipped in 10 points.

Davon Bartin led CNU (5-2) with 19 points followed by Donta Selden with 17. Mark Blasingame churned out a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Korey Lewis (14 pts.), Edward Riley (13 pts.) and Theo Baker (13 pts.) were the other players in double figures.

FSU shot 32-of-85 (37.6%) from the field, 10-of-25 (40.0%) from beyond the arc and 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the free throw line for the game. Meanwhile, CNU was 32-of-62 (51.6%), 2-of-12 (16.7%) from three-point range and 26-of-30 (86.7%) at the foul line.

Frostburg State opened the game with a 3-0 lead at 19:49 but Christopher Newport scored 12 out of the next 14 points to open a 12-5 lead with 16:02 remaining.

With the CNU lead at 24-16 at 11:59, the Captains pushed their lead to a first-half high 18, 37-19 with 5:43 to play.

The Bobcats answered, however, scoring nine-straight points to cut the deficit to 38-28 with just over three minutes until halftime.

Christopher Newport pushed its lead back to double digits, 42-28, but FSU scored back-to-back baskets to close out the half, trailing 42-32.

Frostburg State opened the second half with a 17-8 run to cut the CNU lead to one at 50-49 with 16:17 left in the contest.

The Captains pushed their lead back to six points twice, the second at 63-57 with 11:08 left, but Hazel scored eight points over a minute and half stretch to help the Bobcats tie the game at 65 at 9:45.

Hazel later gave FSU a five-point lead with his fifth and final three-pointer with 5:25 left in the game.

CNU would take over from there, using a 13-of-14 effort from the free throw in the final 2:52 to earn the 92-84 win.
