— Demetris Pringle led all scorers with 19 points as La Roche defeated Frostburg State 65-50 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action Friday evening.
The Bobcats fall to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the AMCC while the Redhawks improve to 9-10 overall and 7-5 in the AMCC.
The Bobcats took the early lead 2-0 on a jumper by junior Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) just 13 seconds in the game. La Roche would score the next five points to steal the lead 7-2, with 16:14 remaining. Ryley would pull the Bobcats to within one 12-11 on a layup at the 11:58 mark. Backed by a 19-8 run, the Redhawks increased their lead to 12, 31-19 with 4:46 left until halftime.
Frostburg State refused to go away in the first half as junior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) pulled FSU to within four, 31-27, with just under two minutes left. La Roche would answer with a three-pointer by John Barley to take a 34-27 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth as the Bobcats were unable to cut into the Redhawk lead. With 11:24 showing on the clock, La Roche extended the lead to 12 on a Stacy Grady three-pointer.
With just under seven minutes remaining in the game, Nate Davis pushed the lead to 18, 55-37. The Bobcats would use baskets by Ryley and junior Steve Coursey (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) coupled with two redshirt-freshman Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) free throws to cut the deficit to 12, 55-43.
That is as close as the Bobcats would come, as La Roche extended the lead back to 18 on a Pringle layup with just 2:11 remaining. Senior Jamal Peterson (Mitchellville, Md./Laurel) made a free throw with under a minute to end the scoring.
Frostburg State was led by Ryley with 18 poins followed by Coursey with 10. Peterson led FSU in rebounds with seven.
FSU returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Lake Erie at 4:00 pm.
