Men's Basketball Loses to Penn State Behrend, 69-56
12/02/2006

FROSTBURG, Md. — Kevin Buczynski scored a game-high 26 points to lead Penn State Behrend to a 69-56 win over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

FSU falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while PSB improves to 3-2 and 1-1 in the conference.

Junior Antione McCall (Essex, Md./Eastern Tech) led the Bobcats in scoring with 19 points. He also grabbed four rebounds and passed out four assists.

Buczynski, the AMCC’s Preseason Player of the Year, was just 7-of-10 from the field but an impressive 12-of-17 from the charity stripe. Tom Newman was the only other Lion in double figures, scoring 19 points including four three-pointers.

Penn State Behrend scored 14 of the game’s first 17 points to open an 11 point lead with 13:37 remaining. The Bobcats would slowly crawl their way back into the game, using nine minutes to erase the deficit and take a one-point lead, 26-25, on a pair of junior Brian Green (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) free throws.

Frostburg State would control the tempo the rest of the half, opening a six-point lead 36-30 when senior Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) hit a jumper with three seconds left in the period.

From the field, FSU shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) while holding PSB to just 33.3 percent (7-of-21).

PSB came out in the second half and scored the first 11 points, seven from Buczynski, to take a five-point lead, 41-36, at 15:53. Frostburg State narrowed the gap to 46-42 when freshman Ben Tubman (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) made a layup with 12:38 to play.

After Penn State Behrend pushed its lead to seven, 53-46, Green hit a three-pointer to narrow the score to 53-49 at 7:03. However, that was as close as FSU would get as PSB used the remainder of the contest to push its lead to a game-high 13 points and take the win 69-56.

In the second stanza, the Bobcats were 7-of-23 (30.4%) from the floor while the Lions were 12-of-22 (54.5%). Penn State Behrend also used a 14-of-20 effort from the free throw, including eight foul shots down the stretch, to earn the win.

For the game, FSU shot 19-of-49 (39.8%) while PSB was 19-of-43 (44.2%).

FSU returns to the court on Monday when it hosts Shenandoah at 7:00 pm.
