Men's Basketball Nipped By Waynesburg in Overtime
02/04/2002

WAYNESBURG, PA — Sophomore Mike King banked a short jumper in with :04 remaining in overtime to give host Waynesburg College an 89-87 win over Frostburg State Monday night at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Frostburg State (11-10), which saw its season-high four-game winning streak end, trailed 87-85 before junior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) drained a jumper off an inbounds play to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining in the extra session.

The Bobcats and Yellow Jackets battled through a tight opening 10 minutes of the game before FSU went on a 7-0 spurt to take a 20-13 lead at the 9:10 mark. Senior Reynolds Mason (Philadelphia, Pa./Norristown) sparked the run with a pair of jumpers and a free throw.

Waynesburg (13-7) countered with a 9-2 run to forge a 22-22 tie before eventually taking a narrow 34-33 lead at halftime.

Frostburg State came out firing to begin the second half, using hot outside shooting in a 14-3 run to build a 47-37 advantage. Ernst drained a three-pointer to open the half, and sophomore Ryan Grabill (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) sank back-to-back shots from behind the arc to cap spurt.

The Bobcats stretched their lead to as many as 14, 55-41, with 15:00 remaining, but Waynesburg later used a 19-9 run to close to within one (68-67) at the 6:36 mark.

The Yellow Jackets pulled even at 70 with a pair of free throws before Bobcat senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) sank his third three-pointer of the game to put FSU, 73-70, with 4:11 to play.

After Waynesburg tied it again on a three-point play by freshman Ray Gillespie, Bobcat freshman Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Catholic (Va.)) drained a pair of free throws to give FSU a 75-73 lead.

Junior Ray Robinson, who scored a game-high 27 points, pulled the Yellow Jackets even once more with a short jumper, and King followed with another basket to put the hosts up, 77-75, with 2:50 to go.

Rosenthal put FSU back in front, 78-77, at the 2:36 mark with a free throw and a jumper, but Yellow Jacket junior Eli Henderson sank one of two free throws with 1:08 left in regulation to force overtime.

Brown led FSU with 21 points and seven assists, while Rosenthal set career-highs with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Mason added 14 points.

Junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein), who entered the game leading the Bobcats with 21.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, picked up two fouls in the first two minutes of the game and managed just four points and two rebounds in eight minutes before fouling out with 5:45 left in regulation.

King finished with 16 points for Waynesburg, while Rob Strcula (13), Ryan Vance (11) and Eli Henderson (11) also scored in double digits.

Frostburg State will visit Pitt-Greensburg in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
