Men's Basketball Outlasted by Bethany in Double OT
02/05/2003

FROSTBURG, MD — Senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein) tied his career-high with 35 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and senior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) set a career-high with 30 points, but it wasn't enough as visiting Bethany (W.Va.) outlasted Frostburg State, 105-99, in double overtime Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.

Bowery, who scored 35 points in an 88-82 loss to Lake Erie January 11, hit a jumper with five seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 78 and force the first extra session.

Ernst then came through in the clutch in the first overtime, scoring FSU's last eight points, including a game-tying three-pointer with nine seconds left to pull the Bobcats even again, 91-91, and send the game into a second overtime.

Bowery twice gave FSU a two-point lead, the last 97-95, before fouling out with 2:06 left in the second extra period.

Carson Williams and Matt Drahos each sank a pair of free throws to push the Bison in front, 99-97, but Ernst picked off a pass at half court and raced in for a lay-up to tie the contest at 99 with 1:15 to go.

Drahos put Bethany up for good with a three-point play with 54 ticks left, and Mike Majzun hit three of four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Bowery came out hot for the Bobcats in the first half, scoring 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. However, Bethany hit 13-of-28 shots and held a 34-31 lead at intermission.

Frostburg State (6-13) tied the game 10 times in the second half but could never pull ahead. Bowery forged a 52-52 deadlock with a jumper at the 13:02 mark before the Bison (8-11) went on a 7-0 run to take a 59-52 advantage.

Bowery later scored four straight points in a 7-1 spurt that brought FSU to within one, 64-63, but Bethany continued to hold off the Bobcats.

Majzun and Derek Hoffman connected on back-to-back jumpers to give the Bison a 71-66 edge, and, after FSU closed to within two, Drahos hit a lay-up and a free throw to make it a 74-69 contest with 3:06 to play in regulation.

Ernst cut FSU's deficit to three, 74-71, with two free throws at the 2:48 mark, and, after another Drahos lay-up, Bobcat freshman T.J. Dorsey (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley) sank a three-pointer to again bring FSU to within a basket, 76-74.

A Bowery lay-up tied the game at 76 with 2:07 left but Josh Polantz answered for Bethany to give the Bison a 78-76 edge.

After blocking a Majzun shot with 14 seconds remaining, Bowery grabbed a miss by junior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) and hit a short jumper to send the game into overtime.

Sophomore Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) added 15 points for the Bobcats, who dropped their fourth straight game.

Drahos led Bethany with 32 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor and a 10-of-13 performance from the free-throw line.

Hoffman added 18 points, Majzun had 17 points and Mike Drahos posted 15 points and 13 rebounds. Williams finished with 12 points and nine rebounds as Bethany defeated FSU for just the second time in the last nine meetings.

Frostburg State will visit AMCC rival Penn State Behrend on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
