Men's Basketball Rallies Past La Roche in Overtime
01/29/2004

FROSTBURG, MD - Senior Ryan Grabill (Boonsboro, Md./Williamsport) scored a career-high 24 points, including six in overtime, and sophomore Dan Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) had a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds to lift Frostburg State to a thrilling 82-79 overtime win over La Roche Thursday night at Bobcat Arena.

The Bobcats improved to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with their season-high third straight win, while the Redhawks fell to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in the AMCC with their second straight three-point overtime loss.

Frostburg State trailed 70-67 in the closing moments and stayed alive as La Roche missed two free throws with 24 seconds left in regulation.

Junior Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) then drained a three-pointer from about 26 feet with six seconds left to pull the Bobcats even and force the extra session.

Ryley opened the overtime with a short jumper off an assist from Grabill to give FSU its first lead since a 33-32 edge with eight seconds left in the first half.

However, the Redhawks took a 75-72 lead on a three-pointer by junior Demetris Pringle and a driving layup by senior Cliff Foster.

Grabill then sank a pair of free throws to make it a 75-74 contest, and, after two misses from the stripe by Pringle, Vaughn drilled another three-pointer off a pass from Grabill to give FSU a 77-75 lead.

Pringle nailed the last of his eight three-pointers on the evening to put La Roche back in front, 79-78, with 1:17 left in the extra session, but Grabill drained two free throws with 57 ticks remaining to give the Bobcats the lead for good.

Vaughn pulled down a crucial rebound of a Redhawk miss with 39 seconds to play, and Grabill added two more free throws to put FSU on top 82-79.

La Roche had a chance to tie, but Pringle's three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.

Pringle scored 15 of his game-high 33 points in the first half as the teams went into the lockerroom tied at 33.

La Roche used a 9-0 run to open a 61-50 lead with 7:34 remaining before Frostburg State stormed back with a 20-9 run to close out regulation.

Grabill sank a key three-pointer with 2:09 left to cut the Redhawk lead to six (68-62), and he later fed Ryley for a layup with 53 seconds to go to make it a two-point contest (69-67).

La Roche hit one-of-two free throws to take a three-point lead with 42 ticks left to set up Vaughn's heroics. The Redhawks shot just 2-of-7 from the free throw line in the final 2:01 to help FSU's comeback.

Senior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats.

Jason Dolak was the only other Redhawk to score in double figures, adding 14 points to go along with nine boards.

Frostburg State will visit Lake Erie in another AMCC match-up Saturday at 4:00 pm.
