WAYNESBURG, PA —
Junior Jason Peterson (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen)
came off the bench to score 33 points and grab 12 rebounds to help Frostburg State overcome a 15-point first-half deficit and defeat host Waynesburg 85-80 Tuesday night at Marisa Fieldhouse.
Peterson, in just his third game as a Bobcat after transferring from Harford Community College, hit 14-of-20 shots from the field and 4-of-5 attempts from the free throw line to spark the Bobcats (1-2).
He pulled down nine offensive rebounds and also handed out four assists.
Waynesburg (0-3) opened a 17-7 lead seven minutes into the game and held a 41-26 advantage with 3:07 left in the first half, but Peterson scored six points in an 11-3 Bobcat run to close the opening stanza.
The Yellow Jackets took a 44-37 cushion into halftime.
Peterson then tallied four more points in a 9-2 Bobcat run to open the second half as FSU quickly pulled even at 46.
Junior Daniel Ryley (Frederick, Md./St. John's Prospect Hall) sank a free throw with 15:46 remaining to put the Bobcats ahead to stay, and Peterson continued to be unstoppable, pouring in nine more points over the next five minutes to help give FSU a 61-52 lead.
The Yellow Jackets countered with eight straight points to close to within one, 61-60, with 7:42 to play, but red-shirt sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) hit a three-pointer to spark the Bobcats to an 8-0 run of their own that pushed them in front 69-60 with 5:20 remaining.
Waynesburg rallied once again, pulling to within 71-67 with 3:14 left. However, Ryley hit a jumper, fed Peterson for a basket and pulled down a rebound that led to another Peterson bucket to make it a 77-69 Bobcat lead.
Frostburg State sealed the victory by hitting 6-of-6 free throws in the final 25 seconds.
Ryley finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
Jeff Nero scored 13 points to lead five Waynesburg players in double figures. The Yellow Jackets hit just 5-of-20 from three-point range and 15-of-28 from the free throw line.
Frostburg State will open its home schedule Tuesday, November 30 when it hosts Shenandoah at 7:30 pm.
