Men's Basketball Unable to Take Down La Roche, Bobcats Fall 67-59
01/31/2007

FROSTBURG, Md. — Adam Kostewicz scored a game-high 15 points to lead La Roche to a 67-59 win over Frostburg State in men’s basketball action, Wednesday evening at Bobcat Arena.

FSU is now 9-11 overall on the season and 8-5 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference while LAR is 7-13 and 5-8 in the conference.

Senior Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) was the only Bobcat in double figures, netting 11 points. Junior Jermaine Kapombe (Washington, D.C./Friendly) added nine points for the hosts followed by junior Brian Green (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), sophomore Makiha Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park) and freshman Paul Shockley (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) each with seven.

Stacy Grady and Zack Kostorick chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Redhawks.

For the game, LAR was 21-of-42 (50.0) from the floor while FSU was just 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the field. Frostburg State recorded 18 steals and out rebounded La Roche 20-8 on the offensive glass but the Redhawks were 20-of-26 (76.9%) from the foul line while the Bobcats were just 10-of-20 (50.0%)

The game started slow with the Redhawks holding just a 3-2 lead with 13:39 left in the half. The visitors would then go on a small run to take a 11-4 lead at 11:30. FSU countered by taking its first lead 19-18 on a jumper by sophomore Juan Wansley (Odenton, Md./Arundel) with 4:21 to play.

Frostburg State held a slim 24-23 lead with 2:20 remaining but La Roche made a basket and two free throws down the stretch to help take a 27-25 lead into halftime.

The second half opened much like the first as neither was able to pull away. The Redhawks took a five-point advantage, 36-31, at 13:49 but FSU answered just three minutes later by taking a one-lead, 39-38.

That was the last time the Bobcats would lead as LAR regained the lead and pushed it to seven, 50-43 with 7:30 to play in the game. Frostburg State was unable to cut into the lead and the Redhawks took a 10-point lead with just 1:06 to play, before going on for the 67-59 win.

The Bobcats return to action on February 3 when they travel to Pitt-Bradford at 4:00 pm.
