Men's Basketball Upsets Penn State Behrend in First Round of AMCC Tournament

ERIE, pa. — Senior Marcus McIntyre (Washington, D.C./Wilson) scored a team-high 18 points to carry the No. 6 seeded Frostburg State men’s basketball team to a 59-54 upset victory over No. 3 seeded Penn State Behrend in the opening round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Bobcats improved to 12-14 overall while the Lions end their season with a 19-7 overall mark. The win marks the first for Head Coach Webb Hatch at Penn State Behrend in his seven seasons at FSU.

FSU advances to play No. 2 seeded Pitt-Greensburg Friday evening at 8:00 pm in Buffalo, N.Y. in the tournament semifinals.

David Gahan gave PSB a 10-4 lead with a basket at 16:33. Sophomore Brian Owen (Gainesville, Va./Brentsville) then scored six-straight points to spark a Bobcat run that tied the game at 12 with 14:28 left in the half. One minute later, sophomore Dale DeBerry (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) gave FSU its first lead of game, 17-15, with a layup off of a steal by senior Brandon Howell (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase).

Sophomore Keith Hazel (Weirton, W.Va./Weir) drained a three pointer with 3:45 left in the half to give FSU a 25-23 lead. Kevin Buczynski cut the lead to 27-26 with 1:11 left, but Howell made a three with six seconds left to give the Bobcats a 30-26 advantage at the break.

Frostburg State came out in the second half and kept the pressure on as its lead remained at or near six points for the first 11 minutes of action. Buczynski narrowed the Lion deficit to three points, 47-44, at 8:44. At 5:17, he gave Penn State Behrend the lead, 49-48, for the first time since 13:20 mark in the first half.

McIntyre regained the lead for the Bobcats, 51-50, with a layup at 2:16. Gahan briefly gave the Lions the lead at 1:18 with a layup but with one minute showing, Owen hit a jumper that gave the Bobcats the lead for good.

McIntyre sealed the win for Frostburg State making six free throws with less than 30 seconds to play.

For the game, FSU was 20-of-43 (46.5%) from the field, 6-of-18 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 13-of-18 (72.2%) from the foul line. PSB shot 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the floor, 5-of-25 (25%) from three-point range and 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the free throw line.

Howell added 14 points for the Bobcats on 5-of-7 shooting including four three pointers. Owen also scored in double figures adding 10 points and six assists.

Penn State Behrend was led by Buczynski with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Gahan was the only other Lion in double figures with 10 scores.
