Sophomore Curt Ruble (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South)
finished seventh and junior Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata)
placed eighth to lead the Frostburg State men’s cross country team to the championship at the DeSales University Invitational.
The Bobcats scored 67 points to outdistance 22 other squads. Division II East Stroudsburg was second with 85 points, Swarthmore third with 104 points, Mary Washington fourth with 123 points and Muhlenberg fifth with 124 points.
Ruble posted a time of 27:47 and May added a finish of 27:48 in the 233-runner field. Freshman Marshal Lawrence (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) placed 12th overall in 28:11, junior Andy Watson (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) finished 21st in 28:33 and senior Sid Bittinger (Midland, Md./Westmar) came in 22nd in 28:36.
The FSU women competed with only four of the five required runners and did not score in the team standings.
Freshman Jennifer Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) led FSU with a 34th-place finish out of 245 runners in 27:07. Senior Carolyn Kilkus(Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was 74th in 28:26, sophomore Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark) was 89th in 28:57 and freshman Diana Baker (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) was 214th in 34:44.
Division II Kutztown won the women’s team title with 33 points, edging Connecticut College, which scored 38 points.
The Bobcats return to action at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship Meet to be held Saturday, October 29 at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds in Greensburg, Pa. The FSU men are seeking their fifth straight AMCC title and eighth in the league’s nine-year history, while the Bobcat women are chasing their seventh conference crown and third in the last four years.
