Men's Cross Country Wins LVC Invitational, Axman Captured Women's Individual Crown

FORT UNIONTOWN GAP, Pa. — Frostburg State won the men’s team title and junior Bonnie Axman (Burke, Va./James Robinson) captured the women’s individual crown at the Lebanon Valley College Invitational Saturday.

The Bobcat men placed five runners in the top 17 and outdistanced the 17-team field with 44 points. Roanoke was second with 57 points, followed by host Lebanon Valley (103), King’s (120) and York (157).

Junior Ed May (Bryantown, Md./La Plata) finished second out of 164 runners with a time of 27:01. He was the top collegiate finisher behind Lebanon Valley alumnus Pete Lobianco, who ran the 8,050-meter course in 26:52.

Sophomore Curt Ruble (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) was fourth overall in 27:31, freshman Marshal Lawrence (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) was 14th in 28:13 and senior Ron Lipscomb (Avilton, Md./Northern Garrett) was 15th in 28.20.

Freshman Brian Leiter (New Windsor, Md./Francis Scott Key) wrapped up FSU’s scoring by placing 17th in 28:26.

Axman was again impressive in winning her second individual title in as many weeks. She covered the 5,100-meter course in 18:52.02 to lead a pack of 143 runners and help FSU place fifth out of 14 squads with 190 points.

Messiah captured the women’s title with 24 points, followed by Elizabethtown (62), Roanoke (70) and Penn State Altoona (180).

Freshman Jennifer Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) was 22nd in 21:42, while senior Carolyn Kilkus (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) was 41st in 22:31.

Sophomore Katie Lyell (Newark, Del./Newark) finished 76th in 24:22 and freshman Megan Patton (Barton, Md./Westmar) capped FSU’s scoring with a 98th-place showing in 25:51.

Frostburg State is back in action September 24 in the George Washington University Invitational at Bull Run Park in Centreville, Va.
