FROSTBURG, MD —
Frostburg State junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton)
scored his fifth goal in as many games and assisted on another, but Grove City used a pair of second-half goals to forge a 2-2 tie in the Bobcats' regular-season finale Saturday afternoon in a steady snow fall.
Wieland began the scoring at the 29:06 mark when he headed in a cross from the right corner by junior R.J. Purnell (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield), but neither team could find the net after that and FSU took a 1-0 into halftime.
The Bobcats (10-6-1) then opened a 2-0 edge in the game's 58th minute. Wieland slid after the ball along the far end line and managed to send a perfect pass through the box to sophomore Steve Simpson (Silver Spring, Md./Kennedy), who knocked the ball in from a yard out.
Grove City (11-5-1) cut the lead in half with 18:53 remaining in regulation when senior Chris Crefeld (Manchester, N.H./PTHS) blasted a left-footed shot that curved inside the left post into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out.
The Bobcats were then forced to play a man down when senior defender Scott Gibson (Myersville, Md./Middletown) received a red card with 12:00 left in regulation.
The Wolverines took advantage as Crefeld's mid-range shot grazed Bobcat junior goalie Mike Pregnall's (Herndon, Va./Oakton) left arm and went in with 6:10 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Mike Koper (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) assisted on the goal.
The teams battled through a physical end of regulation as well as the two extra sessions, but both squads came up empty.
Bobcat senior Gary Lesko (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) hit the crossbar off a long-range direct kick in the first minute of the second overtime, and each team had defenders clear the ball out of the goalmouth on several occasions.
Pregnall made 10 saves for Frostburg State, including a diving deflection of a blistering shot in the second extra session.
Grove City junior Brad Smith (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) stopped 12 shots.
The Bobcats will host their fifth straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday. FSU faces Penn State Altoona in Friday's first semifinal at noon, and Penn State Behrend takes on Pitt-Greensburg at 2:30.
The AMCC Championship match will be held on Saturday at 2:00.
