Junior R.J. Purnell (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield)
had a goal and an assist, and the Bobcats blew open a close game with three goals in a six-minute span of the second half en route to a 6-0 victory over visiting Lake Erie Saturday afternoon.
Frostburg State (4-3, 2-0 AMCC) took a 1-0 halftime lead when Purnell found the net off an assist from sophomore Steve Brett (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill)in the game's 21st minute.
The teams then battled through nearly 50 minutes of scoreless action before the Bobcats erupted for three goals in 5:51.
Freshman Mike Jungerheld (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) scored on a header from Purnell with 18:28 remaining, and senior Gary Lesko (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) blasted a direct kick from 30 yards out to put FSU up, 3-0.
Freshman Jon Roth (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) gave the Bobcats a 4-0 lead just under a minute later off a nice assist from sophomore James Denison (Fort Walsh, Md./Canterbury).
Junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) scored his first goal of the season off another direct kick just outside the 18-yard mark with 6:21 left, and sophomore Scott Mucci (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) concluded the scoring with an assist from freshman Greg Moore (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) with 1:52 left.
Junior Mike Pregnall (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made two saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.
The Bobcats controlled the ball through most of the match and outshot Lake Erie (2-6, 1-2), 33-2.
Frostburg State returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Lincoln University at 2:00 p.m.
