Men's Soccer Blanks Penn State Altoona to Win Fifth Straight AMCC Regular-Season Title
10/22/2001

FROSTBURG, MD — Junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) scored three goals and added two assists to lead Frostburg State to a 7-0 blanking of visiting Penn State Altoona Monday afternoon.

The victory gave the Bobcats their fifth straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season title and ensured they will host the AMCC Tournament Friday and Saturday, November 2-3.

FSU improved to 5-1 in league play and finished in a three-way tie with Penn State Behrend and Pitt-Greensburg, but the Bobcats won the crown based on goal differential.

FSU moved to 10-6 overall, giving it six straight seasons of double-digit wins. Penn State Altoona fell to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the AMCC.

Wieland opened the scoring in the game's 11th minute when he headed in a crossing pass from junior R.J. Purnell (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield).

The Bobcats moved in front 2-0 in the 23rd minute as senior Brad Limbacher (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) sent a cross from the right corner that sophomore Nate DePasquale (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) tipped along to Purnell, who found the net from close range.

Sophomore Steve Brett (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) then connected from just outside the six-yard line off an assist from Wieland in the 36th minute, and Limbacher later sent a corner kick to sophomore Rich Kuhn (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), who blasted a left-footer into the upper right corner of the net from 20 yards out to give the Bobcats a 4-0 halftime lead.

Frostburg State put the game away in the second half, scoring three goals in a span of 2:36.

Wieland notched consecutive goals 1:48 apart with assists from Purnell, and Limbacher closed out the scoring when he found the net just 48 seconds later. Wieland and Brett assisted on the final goal.

Junior Mike Pregnall (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made four saves to earn the victory before giving way to fellow junior Andy Gretton (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) with 23:50 remaining.

Pairings for the AMCC Tournament will be announced later this week.

The Bobcats conclude their regular-season when they host Grove City on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
