FROSTBURG, MD —
Frostburg State used a pair of second-half goals to defeat league rival Penn State Behrend, 2-0, and win its second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats improved to 12-6-1 and will await a possible second-straight berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Selections will be announced Sunday night. The Lions fell to 12-7-1.
The teams, which have now met in all five conference title matches, battled through a scoreless first half before the Bobcats opened the scoring in the 51st minute.
Junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) got the ball at the top of the box, cut back inside and lofted a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net over Lion sophomore keeper Jacob Hordych.
Frostburg State, which held a 25-12 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, added an insurance goal with 6:38 remaining when sophomore Steve Brett (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) scored on a breakaway, giving him four goals in the last two games.
Junior Mike Pregnall (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made eight saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season, while Hordych stopped 14 shots for Behrend.
