— The Frostburg State men’s soccer team captured an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament first round victory over Penn State Behrend 3-1 Saturday. The fourth-seeded Bobcats improve to 11-7-2 overall and will travel to top-seeded Pitt-Greensburg for an AMCC Tournament semi-final game Wednesday at 2:00 pm.
Bobcat junior goalkeeper Bryn Varhol (Alexandria, Va./Bishop O'Connell) set the tone by stopping Penn State Behrend’s first seven shots. Varhol recorded nine first-half saves and collected four more in the second stanza to capture his fourth win of the season.
Junior Matt Moffa (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) put the Bobcats on the board first in the 12th minute of action off a feed from freshman Trevor Havey (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty).
The Lions, who finished thier season 12-6-1, scored just over six minutes later when freshman Spencer Frank slipped one by Varhol with junior Justin Ramsay receiving credit for the assist.
With just under three minutes remaining before halftime, Havey gave the Bobcats the lead the lead for good with his eighth goal of the season.
The second half started just like the first, with Varhol making three saves in the first eight minutes to keep FSU in the lead.
In the 60th minute, junior Steve Zoutman (Chester, N.Y./Goshen) was awarded a penalty kick after being tackled in the 18-yard box, but his shot missed wide.
Penn State Behrend was unable to capitilize on the break, and the Bobcats put the game away with Moffa scoring his second goal of the contest in the final minute to seal the victory .
