GETTYSBURG, PA —
The Frostburg State men's soccer team collected its first win of the season Wednesday eveing with two late goals to defeat Gettysburg 2-0. The Bobcats are now 1-2 in 2005 while Gettysburg falls to 1-1-1.
The Bullets had the momentum in the first half as they outshot the Bobcats 10-3. Senior goalkeeper Derek Richardson (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) made all four of his saves in the first half as the teams entered the break knotted at 0-0.
In the second half, FSU came out with more intensity creating eight shots, while holding Gettysburg to just two.
At the 85:52 mark, sophomore Gregg Laskow (Plainsboro, N.J./WWP-North (Rider)) scored from just outside the 18-yard box giving Frostburg State the 1-0 advantage.
One minute later, sophomore Trevor Havey (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) added an insurance goal with his second score of the season.
Richardson faced 12 shots and made four saves to pickup up his first win of the season.
“We came out sluggish but we hung in there,” said Head Coach Keith Byrnes. “In the second, the guys never stopped playing. They played hard for the entire 45 minutes and they challenged everything. We got one or two breaks to go our way that made the difference. I’m really proud of their effort and heart they showed battling for the win.
Frostburg State returns to action on Friday, September 9 when it travels to New Jersey for the Richard Stockton Tournament. FSU opens play against the hosts at 8:00 pm.
