FROSTBURG, MD —
Freshman Hignio Ondo headed in the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to lift La Roche to a hard-fought 3-2 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win over Frostburg State on a cold and rainy Wednesday afternoon.
The Redhawks (8-9, 4-3 AMCC) began the scoring in the 24th minute when freshman Cory Fogle sent a shot just inside the left post off a pass from freshman Aaron Huselton.
The Bobcats (10-6-1, 5-3) had several chances later in the first half but came away empty.
Freshman Eric Whisman (Severn, Md./Glen Burnie) had a shot roll through the goal mouth in the 34th minute, and freshman Kenny Dotter (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) sent a blast from just inside the 18-yard line left of the net in the 36th minute.
FSU was awarded a free kick inches outside the 18-yard line in the closing seconds of the half but could not get set up in time for a shot and time expired.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, FSU’s fortunes took another turn for the worse when a Bobcat player received a red card, forcing the hosts to play a man down the final 26 minutes.
However, following a La Roche foul and yellow card in the 69th minute, Bobcat junior Matt Moffa (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) blasted the free kick into the left side of the net from about 25 yards out to tie the game.
La Roche took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute when Huselton dribbled in from midfield and sent a shot in from 20 yards away, but FSU tied the game again just 38 seconds later.
The Bobcats were awarded another free kick following a La Roche foul and yellow card deep in the Redhawk right corner, and junior Wyatt Sagers (La Plata, Md./La Plata) knocked in a crossing pass from senior Jamie Romano (Joppatowne, Md./John Carroll) to forge a 2-2 deadlock.
The Bobcats had another strong scoring chance in the 82nd minute when freshman Trevor Havey (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) had a one-on-one opportunity, but Redhawk junior keeper Corey Baird dove out and Havey’s shot went wide right.
Bobcat sophomore starting goalie Derek Richardson (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) then came out the game in the 83rd minute due to an injury, and La Roche needed just 11 seconds after the restart to net the game-winner.
Freshman Kisito Ndong lofted a throw in from the far sideline, and Ondo headed the ball just inside the right post to complete the scoring.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday when they visit Lake Erie at 3:00 pm in their final AMCC match of the regular season.
