The Frostburg State men’s soccer team lost to Gettysburg College 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats (1-1) had difficulty possessing the ball for much of the first half. Gettysburg capitalized on a mistake by Frostburg State and scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute. Bullet striker, Chris Bayon was credited with scoring the goal.
The Bullets had a chance at scoring another goal in the 32nd minute; however a goal-line save by sophomore defender Adam Gracia (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) kept the Bobcats down just one goal.
Gettysburg was able to net another goal at the 37:14 minute mark of the first half, when Geoff Menge crossed the ball from the left flank into Ryan Peiffer. Peiffer found himself open in front of the Bobcat goal and headed the ball into the net past the diving hands of FSU keeper Derek Richardson (New Windsor, Md./Linganore).
The Bobcats best chance of the match came with seconds left in the first half, when freshman Michael Bowers (Walkersville,Md/.Walkersville) rose above the Gettysburg defenders and headed the ball on goal, forcing Gettysburg keeper, Adam Finkel, to make a save.
Coming out of half-time, FSU found themselves on their heels and down another goal, when Bayon scored his second goal of the match, in the 46th minute.
For the contest, Gettysburg outshot Frostburg 13-8.
Richardson and sophomore goalkeeper Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River) minded the nets for Frostburg State.
At the conclusion of the game, the Gettysburg Bullets were awarded the championship plaque for winning the FSU Tournament.
The All-Tournament players were; from Gettysburg, Chris Bayon, Garrett Bruno,and Mike Tirney and from Frostburg, Gracia, junior Andrew Appelbaum (Severn, Md./Old Mill) and junior Kenny Dotter (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point).
The Bobcats will return to action on September 6 when it travels to Bethany College for a 5:30 pm match.
Waynesburg 3, Neumann 2
In the consolation game of the FSU tournament Waynesburg defeated Neumann, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Bobacat Stadium.
Waynesburg set the tone early when Dave Thorn scored the first goal of the contest just under two minutes into the game. David Peters was credited with the assist as the Yellow Jackets took an early 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets added another goal 26 minutes later when Todd Schollaert scored off an assist by Ross Phillips to make the score 2-0 at the half.
The Knights came out on fire in the second half when Barry Harvey’s first goal of the day came with just 34 seconds on the clock. Harvey’s goal was assisted by Charles Fryling cutting the deficit to a 2-1 game.
The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 3-1 when Peters scored with 48 minutes on the clock.
Harvey’s second goal was assisted by Mike Barbagallo to bring the Knight within a goal, 3-2. However, Waynesburg held onto the lead for its first win of the season.
Waynesburg goalie Brad Davis made 11 saves while Neumann’s keeper Luke devlin made 16 saves in the losing effort.
Davis and Thorn’s strong performances for the Yellow Jackets earned them all-tournament team honors. Harvey’s two-goal performance for the Knights earned him all tournament honors along with teammate Joe Fargnoli.
Waynesburg is now 1-1 while Neumann falls to 0-2 on the season.
