Men's Soccer Routs Penn State Altoona to Reach Fifth-Straight AMCC Final
11/02/2001

FROSTBURG, MD — Sophomore Steve Brett (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) scored three goals and junior Jon Wieland (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) added a goal and three assists to lead top-seeded Frostburg State to a 9-0 win over fourth-seeded Penn State Altoona in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship Friday afternoon.

The Bobcats (11-6-1) will meet No. 3 Penn State Behrend in the AMCC championship match for the fifth-straight year Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

The Lions (12-6-1) edged No. 2 Pitt-Greensburg, 2-1, in Friday's other semifinal.

Frostburg State gained an early 1-0 lead in the game’s fourth minute when senior Gary Lesko (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) converted a penalty kick after sophomore Rich Kuhn (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was pulled down in the box.

The Bobcats broke through again in the 37th minute when Kuhn took a crossing pass from Wieland just outside the six and knocked the ball into the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Brett put the Bobcats up, 3-0, just three minutes later with an assist from freshman Carlington Harvey (Trelawny, Jamaica/Harwood) and then headed the ball off a Cougar defender and into the net with three minutes left in the first half. Lesko and sophomore Sean Simpson (Silver Spring, Md./Kennedy) assisted as FSU took a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

Frostburg State continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring on four straight shots to build an 8-0 bulge.

Wieland headed in a pass from Kuhn in the 51st minute, and Limbacher added a beautiful diving header inside the left post off an end line service from Wieland just over two minutes later.

Freshman Philip Rub (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) banged in a close range shot off the post in the 66th minute with an assist from Wieland, and Rub fed Brett for his third goal of the game just moments later to make 8-0.

Freshman Luke Mongrain (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) capped the scoring with six minutes remaining, knocking in the rebound of a shot by freshman Marcus Doe (Germantown, Md./Germantown).

Junior Mike Pregnall (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made one save before giving way to junior Andy Gretton (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone).

The Bobcats outshot Altoona, 28-3.
