Men's Soccer to Face Penn State Behrend in First Round of AMCC Tournament
10/26/2005

FROSTBURG, Md. — For the second consecutive year, the Frostburg State men’s soccer team will face rival Penn State Behrend in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.

The two squads will meet Saturday in Erie, Pa. at 2 pm.

The No. 5 Bobcats (8-9) and No. 4 Lions (12-5) finished with identical 6-3 league records, but Behrend earned the higher seed and the quarterfinal home match thanks to its 1-0 win over FSU in their regular-season meeting earlier this month in Erie.

The Bobcats, who as the No. 4 seed knocked the No. 5 Lions out of the AMCC playoffs with a 3-1 first-round home win last year, head into this year’s tournament having won four of their last six contests, including two this past weekend. The Lions have dropped two their last three matches.

These two squads were once used to meeting for the AMCC championship, as the schools squared off in six of the first seven AMCC title matches.

Both Frostburg State and Penn State Behrend have each won three AMCC championships, with Pitt-Greensburg capturing the other two crowns.

Still up for grabs in this year’s men’s tournament is the No. 6 seed, with La Roche (5-10-2, 3-5) and Pitt-Bradford (4-14, 3-6) in contention. La Roche's final regular-season game versus Mount Aloysius (0-16, 0-8) was postponed from Tuesday to Thursday due to poor weather and field conditions.

If La Roche ties or wins, it will get the No. 6 seed. If La Roche loses, Pitt-Bradford will earn the berth, based on its win over the Redhawks during the regular season. No. 3 Penn State Altoona (12-5-2, 6-2-1) will host that first-round match-up Saturday at 2 pm.

Top-seeded Medaille (16-1-2, 8-0-1 AMCC) and No. 2 Lake Erie (9-5-2, 7-2-0) have earned first-round byes and will host semifinal matches Wednesday, November 2 at 2 pm.

The Penn State Behrend-Frostburg State winner will meet Medaille, and the No. 3-No.6 victor will face Lake Erie.

The AMCC championship match is scheduled for Saturday, November 5 at the highest remaining seed. The AMCC Tournament champion will receive an automatic bid the NCAA Division III Tournament.
