Men's Swimming & Diving Wins Second Straight AMCC Title

GROVE CITY, PA — The Frostburg State men's swimming and diving team won its second straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title as part of the Grove City College Invitational this past weekend.

The Bobcats scored 333 points to outdistance Penn State Behrend and Penn State Altoona, who scored 270 and 114 points, respectively. FSU also finished fifth overall out of 11 teams at the highly competitive meet.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of sophomores Ryan Kentrus (St. Leonard, Md./Patuxent), Greg Barnhart (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus), Ben Marrapodi (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) and Brian Flynn (Bridgewater, Conn./Shepaug Valley) began the meet with a seventh-place finish in a time of 1:35.55.

Senior Jay Garner (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) enjoyed a stellar meet with three top-five individual finishes.

He earned provisional qualification for the NCAA national championships in the 200-yard breaststroke with a runner-up finish in 2:09.81, placed third in the 200-yard individual medley with an AMCC- and school-record time of 1:57.72 and finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.53

Senior Kelly Ryan (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) was also impressive, placing in the top six in three events.

He set AMCC and personal records with his third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (21.79), and he placed third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.41), setting AMCC and FSU records in the event.

Ryan later turned in a sixth-place showing in the 100-yard backstroke (53.72) to set another AMCC record.

Ryan and Garner also joined sophomores Kevin Nolan (Annandale, Va./Annandale) and Jay Mayden (Baltimore, Md./Arlington Baptist) to set four AMCC records in the relays.

The quartet teamed for third-place finishes in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays, setting a school record in the 200 (1:37.81) and turning in a time of 3:33.32 in the 400.

They then placed fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay in a school-record 7:13.97 and were fourth in the 400-yard freestyle in 3:15.24.

Nolan turned in three top-nine finishes in individual action, placing seventh in the 200-yard butterfly in AMCC and school-record 2:02.10, finishing eighth in the 100-yard buttefly in 54.44 after setting an AMCC record with a qualifying time of 53.92 and turning in a ninth-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley in a personal-best 2:01.13.

Mayden also set an AMCC championship record in the 400-yard individual medley, posting a preliminary time of 4:30.34 before placing seventh in a finals time of 4:33.56, and he finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in a 50.43 after setting a personal record with a 49.09 in the qualifying round.

Marrapodi added an eighth-placed finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in a personal-record 1:02.85 and finished 10th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a personal-record 2:20.65 and

Junior Matt Brew (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood) placed 10th in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in 11:36.90.
