Men's Tennis Blanks Pitt-Greensburg in Season-Opener

GREENSBURG, PA — The Frostburg State men's tennis team began defense of its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title by blanking Pitt-Greensburg, 9-0, in the season-opener for both schools Wednesday afternoon at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

FSU had little trouble in the match and roared out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles competition.

Senior Terence Killen (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and sophomore Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) paired for an 8-1 win at the top doubles flight, while seniors Dave Butler (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) and Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) also won by an 8-1 margin at the No. 2 spot.

Junior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and freshman Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory at the third flight.

The Bobcats, under the direction of first-year head coach Gene Cutter, continued their dominance in singles play.

Stephens posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chris Gesenti at the top flight, and Killen followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the second spot.

Ruest was a 6-0, 6-2 winner against Bryan Gesinee at the third position, while Butler turned in a 6-0, 6-1defeat of Tom Janecki at the fourth flight.

Shillinger then defeated Duneey Mehotra, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5, and Spangenberg handled Chris Lukew, 6-1, 6-1, for his first career singles victory.

Frostburg State, which has now won 17 straight dual matches dating back to 2000, returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Juniata at the Cordts Center Tennis Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m.
