ERIE, PA —
The Frostburg State men’s tennis team blanked Alfred, Penn State Behrend and Thiel by 5-0 scores to win the Penn State Behrend Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (6-2) began the day with a sweep of Alfred. Sophomore Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) downed Tim Inthirkoth, 8-1, and senior Terence Killen (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) followed with an 8-2 victory against Bill Tuttle.
Junior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) then got past Randy Vecchione, 8-5, before freshman Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) closed out singles play with an 8-3 win over Kris Bean.
Seniors Dave Butler (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) and Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) sealed the shutout by edging Nate Empie and Steve Harvey, 9-7, in the doubles match.
FSU then blanked host Penn State Behrend. Stevens and Killen each posted 8-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, and Ruest turned in an 8-3 victory over Brent Carlson at the third spot.
Junior Matt Dickey (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) edged Jacob Hillman, 9-7, at the fourth flight.
Butler and Shillinger wrapped up the victory with a 9-8 (7-4 tiebreaker) win against Andrew Schenck and Steve Broussard in doubles play.
The Bobcats then captured the tournament title with an impressive 5-0 shutout of Thiel. FSU won three flights by commanding 8-0 scores.
Stephens and Killen posted shutouts at the top two spots, and Butler and Shillinger won their matches by 8-5 margins.
Ruest and Spangenberg finished Thiel off with an 8-0 win in the doubles match.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow with a pair of AMCC contests at Penn State Behrend. FSU will face the host Lions at 10 a.m. before taking on Lake Erie at noon.
