BETHANY, WV —
The Frostburg State men's tennis team picked up its third win in its last four matches by downing host Bethany (W.Va.), 8-1, Wednesday afternoon.
The Bobcats (7-5) began the day by sweeping the three doubles flights.
Bobcat junior Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and sophomore Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) opened with an 8-2 win over Pat Green and Zach Richards at the No. 1 flight, and senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) and junior Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) followed with an 8-2 victory against Brian Cerullo and Eric Beeson at the second spot.
Sophomore Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and freshman Allan Blanks, Jr. (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) closed out doubles play with an 8-5 defeat of Cody Tyler and Eric Givens at the third flight.
In singles action, Stephens continued his torrid play by downing Green, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. Stephens has now won 11 straight singles matches since a season-opening loss against Division II Shepherd (W.Va.).
Lyst then posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Richards at No. 2, and Shillinger picked up his fourth straight win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Cerullo at No. 3.
Spangenberg turned in a 6-2, 6-2 win against Beeson at the No. 4 flight, while Della-Luna improved to 8-2 with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Jason Brun at the No. 5 spot.
The Bison (0-8) got their lone point of the day from the No. 6 position, where Givens edged Blanks, 6-4, 6-4.
Frostburg State returns to action on Thursday when it visits Waynesburg for a 3:00 pm match.
