FROSTBURG, MD —
Sophomore Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett)
and senior Terence Killen (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard)
each won their singles matches in straight sets before teaming for a victory at No. 1 doubles to lead Frostburg State to an 8-1 win over visiting Juniata College Thursday afternoon at the Cordts Center Tennis Complex.
Stephens, who improved his career singles record to 19-1, defeated junior Satoshi Kimura, 6-2, 6-0, at the top singles flight, and Killen followed with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of freshman David Bullock at the second position.
Junior Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over sophomore Scott Noerr at the third flight before senior Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) turned away junior Kyle Snyder, 6-4, 6-2, at the fourth spot.
Freshman Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) handled freshman Mitch Somers, 6-0, 6-2, at the sixth spot.
Senior Ethan Gibbel picked up Juniata's lone win, rallying past senior Dave Butler (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett), 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Bobcats (2-0) finished with a sweep of doubles actions.
Stephens and Killen paired for an 8-2 win over Kimura and Bullock, Shillinger and Butler got past Noerr and Gibbel, 8-4, and Ruest and Spangenberg downed freshman Tim Rickards and junior Kyle Snyder, 8-4.
Frostburg State, which extended its winning streak to 18 straight dual matches dating back to 2000, returns to action on March 27 when it hosts Penn State Altoona at 3:00 p.m.
