FROSTBURG, MD -
The Frostburg State men's tennis team was defeated 7-2 Saturday by Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend.
The Bobcats (5-9, 3-2 AMCC) dropped three tight matches in doubles action and only picked up two singles victories against the top-ranked Lions (12-7, 5-0 AMCC).
Senior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and junior Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) were edged 9-8 (6) at No. 1 doubles by Ryan Deimel and John Marini, while seniors Pete Della-Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) fell in a close 8-6 decision to Jon Barber and Brian Espin.
At third doubles, freshman Andrew Holt (Southern/Harwood, Md.) and junior Jake Helms (North County/Linthicum, Md.) were bested by a narrow 9-7 margin by Matt Meyer and Kevin Fiorenzo.
Stephens, who played his previous doubles match injured, was unable to compete against Deimel at the No. 1 singles position and retired after the first game.
Lyst picked added a win at second singles over Marini, 6-4, 6-2, while Della-Luna dropped his contest to Barber at the No. 3 slot, 6-0, 6-4.
Robinson contributed a victory at fourth singles when he ousted Espin 6-1, 6-4.
Helms lost his match to Fiorenzo at the fifth flight 6-3, 6-2, and Holt fell to Meyer at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-2.
Frostburg State will host Penn State Altoona (5-6, 2-3 AMCC) in another conference match Monday at 3:00 pm.
