Men’s Tennis Drops Matches to Carleton and Colby

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Frostburg State continued to face very tough competition during its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. this week. The Red and Black were blanked 9-0 by Carleton College (Minn.) Tuesday and then fell to Colby College (Maine) 7-2 Wednesday.

Against Carleton, senior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and junior Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) were beaten at No. 1 doubles by Mike Ottum and Aleks Diamond-Stanic, 8-2.

Seniors Pete Della-Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) were dropped at second doubles by Andrew Tulloch and William Holmes, 8-1.

At third doubles, juniors Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick/Frederick, Md.) and Jake Helms (North County/Linthicum, Md.) were blanked 8-0 by Drew Piston and Pat Maloney.

In singles play, Stephens lost his contest to Holmes in a tough 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 (super-tiebreaker). At the second flight, Lyst was ousted by Ottum 6-1, 6-0, while Spangenberg was routed by Maloney at third singles 6-0, 6-0.

Della Luna dropped his contest at fourth singles to Jake Hippe, 6-0, 6-0, and Robinson was bested 6-3, 6-1 at the fifth slot by Diamon-Stanic. At the No. 6 position, freshman Andrew Holt (Southern/Harwood, Md.) dropped to Rob Stern 6-0, 6-0.

Against Colby, the Bobcats (1-5) had better luck.

Stephens and Lyst picked up a win at No. 1 doubles when they downed Ben Crane and John Fallon 8-6. Della Luna and Robinson fell at No. 2 doubles to Tim Stenovec and James Cryan 8-6, while Spangenberg and Helms lost their contest at third doubles to Matt Morrison and Tom Gildersleeve, 8-0.

In singles play, Stephens bested Marc Kassin 6-3, 6-2, while Lyst was felled by Steve Schnert, 6-0, 6-1.

Della Luna dropped his No. 3 singles match to Stenevec, 6-0, 6-0 and Robinson was routed at fourth singles by Crane, 6-0, 6-1.

Spangenberg was downed at fifth singles by Kevin Yardi, 6-0, 6-1 and Holt fell to Morrison, 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth flight.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday, March 25, when they take on Albright University at 11:00 a.m. in their last spring break match.
