MARTINSBURG, WV —
The Frostburg State men's tennis team opened its 2003 season with a 9-0 loss to Division II Shepherd (W.Va.) College Wednesday afternoon at the Holiday Inn Martinsburg.
Shepherd (3-1), which won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament last year, opened the day by sweeping the three doubles matches.
Bobcat juniors Justin Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Pete Della-Luna (Moshpee, Mass./Longmeadow) were shutout, 8-0, by Mike Farrell and Eric Stevenson at the top doubles flight, while sophomores Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) fell, 8-1, to Brian Clarke and Tim Halter at No. 2.
Seniors Scott Ruest (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and Sean Shillinger (Darnestown, Md./Quince Orchard) then dropped an 8-1 decision to Wray Sherman and Greg Selby at the third position.
The Rams proved to be too much in singles play, winning all six flights in straight sets.
Clarke posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stephens at the top spot, while Farrell downed Lyst, 6-2, 6-0, at the second flight.
Selby was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Shillinger at No. 3, and David Seiforth blanked Spangenberg, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Sherman downed Ruest, 6-0, 6-1, at the fifth flight before Stevenson closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Della-Luna.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday when they take on Division II Charleston (W.Va.) at Rawling Heights Racquet Club beginning at 2:30 pm.
