ALTOONA, Pa. —
The Frostburg State men’s tennis team dropped its season-opening match to Penn State Altoona 7-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Blair Racquet Club.
Seniors Gary Lyst (Silver Spring, Md./Blair) and Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick, Md./Frederick) picked up FSU’s wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles flights.
Lyst swept Jared Feerrar 6-2, 6-4 at the top singles spot to run his winning streak to 10 matches dating back to April 3, 2004, while Spangenberg rallied past Alex Chang 3-6, 6-3 (10-4) at the second flight.
Penn State Altoona captured all three doubles matches as well as the final four singles contests.
Lyst and freshman Matt Chisholm (La Plata, Md./La Plata) dropped a narrow 8-6 decision to Feerrar and Mike Stefan at No. 1 doubles, Spangenberg and freshman Jacob Hondert (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) fell 8-5 to Chang and Pat Cooper at No. 2 and sophomore Chris Schoenbauer (Riva, Md./South River) and freshman John Thrasher (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) were blanked 8-0 by Andy Brunhuber and Kevin Dolansky at No. 3.
In singles action, Stefan downed Chisholm 6-1, ,6-4 at No. 3, Cooper swept Hondert 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, Dolansky got past Schoenbauer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Brunhuber defeated Thrasher 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
