HILTON HEAD, S.C. -
Frostburg State was narrowly defeated by the University of Southern Maine 5-4 Monday in its second match of its spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. The Bobcats (1-3) split singles matches with the Huskies, but were edged in doubles action.
Senior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and junior Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) defeated Boonthi Singcharen and Andrew Urbanak at the No. 1 doubles post, 8-5.
At the No. 2 flight, seniors Pete Della-Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) were ousted by Matt Filteau and Craig Spaunn, 8-3, while the duo of juniors Andrew Spangenberg (Frederick/Frederick, Md.) and Jake Helms (North County/Linthicum, Md.) were bested by Justin Chaffee and Chris Chaffee at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
In No. 1 singles action, Stephens dropped Singcharen in a 7-5, 6-2 contest, while Lyst battled in three sets to defeat Justin Chaffee at second singles, 6-1, 0-6, 7-6(5)
At the third position, Spangenberg was bested by Filteau, 6-1, 6-1, while Della Luna ousted Urbanak in an erratic 0-6, 6-0, 6-3 fashion at the No. 4 slot.
At No. 5 singles, Robinson was defeated by Chris Chaffee, 6-2, 6-2, while Helms fell to Spaunn at the sixth flight, 6-1, 6-1.
The Bobcats return to action Tuesday, March 23, when they take on Carleton
University at 4 p.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
