GROVE CITY, PA -
The Frostburg State men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Grove City Thursday afternoon in the Grove City College Physical Learning Center.
The Wolverines raised their overall record to 6-1 and have won 21 of their last 23 matches. The Bobcats fell to 2-7 on the season.
Inclement weather forced the match to be moved indoors. The teams used pro-set scoring.
Senior Justin Stephens (Southern Garrett/Oakland, Md.) and junior Gary Lyst (Blair/Silver Spring, Md.) posted an 8-6 win over Patrick Donahue and Brent Moon at the No. 1 doubles flight.
However, the Wolverines captured the other two doubles contests.
Seniors Pete Della Luna (Longmeadow/Moshpee, Mass.) and Dustin Robinson (Leonardtown/Leonardtown, Md.) fell to Brock Thompson and Phil Springirth 8-2 at the No. 2 flight, and freshman Andrew Holt (Southern/Harwood, Md.) and junior Jake Helms (North County/Linthicum, Md.) lost to Andrew Geisler and Sam Fortna 8-4 at the third spot.
In singles play, Stephens bested Donahue 8-5 at the No. 1 flight, but Grove City posted wins at the Nos. 2-5 spots to claim the victory.
Moon got past Lyst 8-6 at the second position, Thompson downed Della Luna 8-3 at the third flight, Springirth doubled up Robinson 8-4 at the fourth spot and Geisler defeated Holt 8-2 at the fifth flight.
Helms picked up FSU's third point with an 8-5 win over Fortna at the No. 6 position.
The Bobcats return to action with a pair of matches this weekend at Penn State Behernd. FSU takes on Alfred Saturday at 11 am before facing Penn State Behrend in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match Sunday at 10 am.
